You Think You have Enough Talent
Right up there with thinking talent is enough to succeed is thinking you have enough talent. What‘s the difference? Well, the first is thinking that all you need to do is be the best player, singer, writer, producer or whatever. The second is KNOWING you‘re the best, and that‘s final!!!
There are not enough words to express how much you must avoid this pitfall.
Don't get me wrong, I know you're good, but I also know that you‘ve been told by everyone you've known since kindergarten that you are the most talented person they‘ve ever known, you‘ll surely succeed and anyone would be CRAZY not to sign you on the spot for a multi-million dollar, multi-year contract!
My point is that you shouldn't believe all the hype. It‘s just not that easy. Does it happen? Well, no, not really.
Having been on the inside, I can honestly say that every "overnight success" I‘ve ever seen was preceded by years of determined work on the part of the "unknown star". Success in the music business, as in any other profession comes from talent, skill, communication, people skills, financial literacy, business sense, tenacious persistence and what they call 'making your own luck'.
Another way to say it is: "Success comes when opportunity and preparedness meet".
So, if you want to succeed, build on these elements:
I recommend that you never allow yourself to think you have "enough" talent. Why? Because despite the fact that there will always be someone more musically talented than you, you can build a tremendous career by being fully prepared to capitalize on every opportunity that comes your way.
